Greeting Cards!!!

I hope this correspondence finds everyone in good spirits and in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. The school year is going fast and will undoubtedly pick up speed as we head towards winter. Here at NHS we have a bevy of traditional activities and events planned for the students and staff!

One of the most important lessons taught at NHS is the gift of giving. When one gives, it benefits those who receive and those who give. Each year the Cardinal House of Apparel collects cash and food donations from multiple businesses around town. All of the proceeds go towards providing meals for those in need in our community. The holidays can be a stressful time and even more so when food insecurity exists for the family. NHS is honored to help others by providing a holiday meal plus three other meals in each gift package. Last year we saw record need and were able to distribute 1,544 meals!! In addition to the holiday meals the NHS Key Club holds a food drive where thousands of items are donated. All of the donations are then given to the community food pantry to help those in need.

The fall activities season was extremely successful. The Cardinal Football team reached the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Girls Cross Country had a state qualifier and the girls swim team added yet another Little Hawkeye Conference title. Aqua Girl coach, Sarah Patterson, qualified multiple athletes for the State Swim Championships. This feat represents the 30th consecutive year Patterson coached teams have qualified an event for the state championships. WOW!!! Way to go Sarah! Not to be outdone the Cardinal regiment received a superior rating at state competition. This represents 20 of the past 21 years to receive a superior rating at state.

After a highly successful fall activity season it is time to come inside and kick off the winter activities. The drama department will be in action this November and be sure to check out our music department as both the band and choir hold outstanding concerts in December. Winter sports will be in full swing and there is something happening just about every night in the NHS gymnasium. Come out and cheer on the Cards and be sure to wear your Red and Black. Believe it or not Seniors and Juniors need to begin planning for the future after high school. Juniors should begin college visits if they are considering furthering their education. Seniors going on to college should have applied or at least have begun the process as well as completed their FAFSA. Millions of dollars in scholarships opportunities are available for seniors. Just watch the emails as we send out information daily regarding new opportunities. Seniors should consider taking an internship within their chosen career field. For more information about the topics above students should see their counselor.

I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for supporting the Newton Cardinals. Whether it be thousands of folks lining the streets for the Homecoming Parade or a music extravaganza in the gym the community of Newton always supports their hometown. Thanks for showing that Red Pride that makes Newton a special place to live and grow.
