Ukrainian Delegation Visits AH

On October 18th, 2011, a delegation of Ukrainian educators, accompanied by Dr. Tom Hoover shown above, visited Aurora Heights Intermediate School as one of many stops on their tour of the area.  Student Council representatives Cole

Cazett and Natalie Camp, also shown above, along with Mrs. Farver, helped give a tour of the building, including stops in all classrooms. With the help of an interpreter, conversations were held around our educational system as compared to that of the Ukraine.  Many subjects and practices are similar, however Ukrainian

children also learn English at an early age.

Mr. Smith’s Social Studies students prepared welcome signs and messages for the guests in their native language.  Differences of interest were the fact that students in Ukraine wear uniforms and attend school in a grade one through 11th setting. By ninth grade students either begin vocational school or college preparation.  It was an informative and enjoyable visit.

Stupendous Student Council!

This year in Student Council we have been discussing ways to make our school better. It has been fun discussing about different Spirit Days like Duct Tape Day that is on October 27th. On November 30th, we will be having Color Day. We have also adopted a service project called Open Your Heart. We will collect new winter items that will go to help students at Aurora Heights. This will be a really fun year in Student Council!

Happy Autumn! One of the best things we can do as teachers, parents, and care givers is to help build resiliency in our children. Resiliency is the ability to bounce back from difficulty and overcome the many challenges that life can bring. There are seven main ways that you can use to begin to build resiliency and they all begin with a “C.” Each month, I will share one “C” and a few ways that you can help your child at home.

Competence is the ability to handle a variety of situations in a positive way. Competence is built through practice. A few ways to build competence include:

· Help your child focus on their strengths and build on them.

· Notice when they do well.

· Be clear and focused when pointing out a mistake.

· Help them recognize what they have going for them.

· Help to build educational, social, and stress-reduction skills.

· Communicate in a way that encourages your child to make positive decisions.

· Let them make safe mistakes so they have the opportunity to right themselves.

If you have more than one child, recognize the unique talents of each.

Have an awesome November!

–Mrs. Jansen–

FEATURING:  Fabulous Fifth Grade

Mr. Bartello, Miss Freese, Mrs. Keeton, Mrs. Klosterboer, Mr. Law and Mr. Burger

This month’s fifth grade news focuses on Lesson 2:6 from Everyday Math.  This is a lesson all students have been working on recently involving probability.  Pairs of students completed the experiment to determine if a group of thumbtacks dropped ten times would land more often point up or down.  Students worked with collecting data, finding averages and determining overall probability.  Ask any fifth grader what they found out.  Shown below are students from Mrs. Keeton’s class.

From our specials teachers….This month—FOCUS on ART

Mrs. Julie Saugstad, Teacher—Thee Cardinal Has Landed….

October 8th, last year’s 5th grade (this year’s 6th grade) saw their IDEA become a REALITY as the 900 pound cardinal flew home to forever roost on its 1,100 pound pedestal.  David and Daniel Lopez-Sanders are pictured with artist John Brommel on installation day.  David even drilled bolts to secure the sculpture!  Stay tuned for details about how Thee Cardinal will glimmer with Red Pride.

The NHS Pace Setters under the direction of Lori Gilmore performed at the October AH Kid of Character Assembly on October 21st.  Former AH student, Kaci Hodge spoke to students about the importance of good character in school now and in the years ahead.  What a treat to have such

talent for our students to see.

Dear Parents and Families of Aurora Heights School,

It’s that time of year already when the season most certainly is changing to the brilliance of fall.  Crisp cool nights are telling us we will soon need heavier jackets and a quickened step when outdoors.  It’s a great time of year to contemplate all that we have.  As we visited with the Ukrainian educators recently, I couldn’t help but feel thankful for the great facilities we have for learning.  As we compared notes, we are more alike than different, yet I am thankful to have such a nurturing and supportive community in which to live and work.  I am thankful for our students and the families they represent.  It is our privilege to work with our students each day, as together we strive to become the best we can be.

Student Assisted Conferences will have occurred by the time you receive this newsletter.  Please know that any time is a good time to check in and to work together for our children….not just conferences.  As parents, you are our biggest resource in knowing how to best work with your child, and we value that.  We will be working with a new initiative called iSpin which is a parent/school collaborative effort to consider ways we could be stronger as we work toward our united goal of improved student achievement.  Mrs. Klosterboer will be heading up the AH team who will be meeting twice a month to go through an agenda of evaluating our school and ways to make it stronger.  We will be asking parents to join us in that effort soon.

We are now beginning the second nine weeks of school.  Thank you for your support in helping your child understand the importance of being at school and doing homework.  We are striving to develop life skills and a strong work ethic in our students.

Enjoy the fall season,

Mrs. Farver
