Always full of enthusiasm and a ‘can do’ attitude, AH will sincerely miss her presence next year.  We wish you the very best in your new adventures.

A Retirement Reception will be held at Aurora Heights on Thursday, May 26th from 4:00– 6:00 p.m. Former students, teachers and friends are invited!

5th and 6th Grade Annual Track Meet at H.A. Lynn Stadium will be held on Friday, May 13th in the afternoon!  Rain date is May 16th!

April started out with “Foolery”

Text Box: Thanks to EVERYONE who took on the Box Tops Challenge. The Girls won with over 3 pounds of Box Tops, but the boys did a great job too! Everyone is a winner in that all the
labels collected will go to PTA to use toward projects for AH. Thank you all for helping!
Box Tops for Education

Since we had many new students to Aurora Heights this year, it seemed fair to indoctrinate them to the second annual April 1st All School “Flood Drill”.

Students were asked to remove socks/shoes and stand on their chairs until the Flood Drill concluded.  Students who attended AH last year were eager to

explain to all that is was indeed an April Fool’s joke.  This will likely be the end of the event….on the other hand we will have a new group of third graders headed our way.  :) (Don’t ask why the picture date reads 3/31/11—we promise it was April 1st!)

Around Aurora Heights

Each month sixth grade leaders have helped with the Kids of Character Assemblies.  Pictured here are Shana Robinson, Mayor Chaz Allen and Jacob Showalter, along with Mrs. Farver and Mrs.

Birkenholz.  Mayor Allen spoke about being “Responsible, Safe and Respectful” at the April Assembly.

Students in Mrs. Turner’s 4th grade try out school-made 3-D glasses.  :)

Below, Joey Sutton had an after school opportunity to try out Officer Lampe’s squad car.  Success-Makers has given

Students an opportunity to spend special time with an adult

Jeff Holschuh and Daphne Davis visited Mrs. Vandelaan’s 6th grade art class to explain the importance of advertising.

6th graders then designed ads for local business owners which were in last weeks Newton Daily News.  Did you see their ads?

The fifth graders’ cardinal is really taking shape! If you or anyone you know would like to help bring our cardinal home to Newton,

contact Julie Saugstad at Aurora Heights –

saugstadj@newton.k12.ia.us

Every little bit helps!

If more money is raised than needed to install the cardinal,

any additional will help fund future fifth grade public art projects.

Dear Parents of Aurora Heights Students,                                              May 1, 2011

It is already that time of year when the final days of a school year seem to rush by.  We have a good full month of school remaining packed full with concerts, field trips and day to day learning.  It has been a good and busy year.  We welcome current third grade students this week as they participate in a tour of Aurora Heights.  Sixth graders have made the trek to the Middle School and have completed registration for next year.

We invite you all to attend our Family Celebration Night on May 17th from 5:30-7:00.  While it will be more of an Academic Celebration, PTA will also be hosting the annual Silent Auction with fantastic gift basket options.

Fourth graders will be going to the Prairie City Tea Room for a special “Manner’s Matter” luncheon.  This is an opportunity to practice the skills they are learning in Guidance and the classroom.  Teachers and students have worked diligently to raise the money that will allow them all this special opportunity.  Fourth graders will also be visiting Wagaman Mill.

Fifth graders have Ashton Park coming up. They will also have a great educational field trip to the Iowa Children’s Water Festival coming up. Fifth and Sixth Graders will have the annual Track Meet at H.A. Lynn Stadium on May 13th.

Sixth grade students will be going to the Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve.  They also have a special trip coming up that will allow them a sneak preview of a college as all students tour Iowa State University later in May.  This trip is planned to inspire

students to set goals to attend college now as they enter the Middle School.

Students will get out at 1:10/1:15 on May 31st, which is the last day of school.  There will be an Awards Assembly that morning and a picnic for lunch.

There are many thank you’s in order.  Our PTA has done a great job of supporting our school this year.  Special thanks to Daphne Davis, outgoing President to taking care of so many details this year!  Thanks to Cindy Rice, Treasurer, Christine Dawson, Secretary, Leslie Nehring, Vice President and all the other volunteers for all your good work.  Thank you to you parents/families for your support this year as we have adjusted to our new configuration.  To the staff and students of AH—thank you all for making a productive year so far….let’s make it so all the way to the end!

Have a great summer.  As you are relaxing and refreshing, remember to READ some great books over the break.  Take care.
