It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of the year! Time sure has flown by! As summer begins, be sure to continue your child’s routine of reading at home. The more books your child reads or listens to over the summer, the better the chances that he/she will return to school at the same reading level (or even higher) than when he/she left in May. The Newton Public Library has a wonderful, free summer reading program that I’d encourage you to enroll your child(ren) in. It’s an easy way to encourage reading over the summer!

The week of May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please take a few minutes with your child to create a card for his/her teacher to thank her for all that she does. The small act of a thank you card means a lot. Your child’s teacher would truly appreciate it!

Be sure to mark your calendars for Family Math Night on Thursday, May 10 from 5:30-7:30. Join us for a night of family math games, and free pizza, drink, and dessert from our PTA! The event will be held in the MS large and small gyms, so you can enter through the middle school gym entrance or the elementary main doors. Hope to see you there!

Finally, I hope you have a fun, relaxing summer. I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) again next year! We will miss our 3rd graders and families as they move on to Aurora Heights in the fall, but wish all of you a lot of success into the future!

Sincerely,

Newton iSPIN Iowa Sustaining Parent Involvement Network

iSPIN is a school-based family engagement team that helps build a strong school community by utilizing the latest research on engaging families in their children’s education.

This months networking session took place on April 25th from 5:30 – 8:30 PM at the Newton High School and included the iSPIN family engagement teams from Woodrow Wilson, Aurora Heights, Berg Elementary, Thomas Jefferson, NHS, and Berg Middle School.  Student achievement is the ultimate goal and we spent some time discussing how we can help students learn and what parents can do to help engage student learning. We learned that family engagement is developmental in nature and school staff must help parents develop a clear “job description.” We realized that we can engage families successfully by having clear ideas that families can take action on and be successful. Your Berg Elementary team got started right away with a reading action plan and we can’t wait to share it with you this fall!
